History & Significance
The wooden station building was originally built in 1898 for the Raleigh & Augusta Railroad, which later became part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway (SAL). SAL eventually became part of CSX. The Town of Southern Pines acquired the building from CSX in 2003 for $1, enabling a rehabilitation project.
The renovation was completed and the depot reopened on February 22, 2005. During the restoration, the flat roof was replaced with a hipped roof, the exterior was repainted, and the waiting room, restrooms, platform, and canopy were upgraded. Funding of approximately $800,000 was provided by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Historically, during the 1948 era, the station had separate waiting rooms for white and African-American passengers, with the ticket office separating the two. The restoration preserved many architectural details from that period.
Today, the station building is the second facility to serve Southern Pines. It replaced an earlier, smaller building that was reportedly loaded onto a flatcar and moved to the nearby community of Vass, NC.
The depot is located in the heart of downtown Southern Pines, and the structure now accommodates multiple functions: an Amtrak passenger waiting area, the Southern Pines Welcome Center, a community room, and a station master’s office.
The town of Southern Pines sits within the Sandhills region—formerly ancient beach dunes—and was developed in part as a healthful retreat by James T. Patrick in 1884. The town became a resort destination for both northern and southern visitors.
Today, Southern Pines (along with Pinehurst and Aberdeen) is home to over 40 golf courses, has hosted national tournaments, and remains a strong location for tourism and retirement living.
