3. History

The story of the station begins with Rocky Mount’s role as a railway hub. The Wilmington & Weldon Railroad made the brick station in 1893 with one-story wings.
In 1911-12, the Atlantic Coast Line expanded the wings into three stories and later added a third story across the building. During the 1960s, an addition was built for signal equipment but was removed later. Because the station is part of Rocky Mount’s historic district, it was included in a downtown rehabilitation plan. Starting in 1997, major renovation added a new entrance, rebuilt canopies and constructed a new ADA-compliant platform. The renovation was completed in December 2000 at a cost of about $9 million, funded by a mix of federal, state and local sources.

Rocky Mount’s early growth was tied to its first post office (established in 1816) and later to the railroad, cotton mills and productive farmland. The railroad helped Rocky Mount become better connected and helped the town grow by the turn of the 20th century.
