The Mount Pleasant station (station code: MTP) serves the city of Mount Pleasant in Iowa ( Amtrak Deals ). Settled in spring 1833, Mount Pleasant earned the nickname “Athens of Iowa” for its strong emphasis on education. The present station building, erected in 1912 by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q), is a single‐story pressed-brick depot.

Station History & Community Context

The town of Mount Pleasant was founded in 1833 and became known for its educational commitment. Notably, Iowa Wesleyan College (est. 1842) claims the title of the oldest college west of the Mississippi River. One of its graduates, Arabella Bobb Mansfield, became the first woman in the United States to pass a bar exam (in 1869).
During the Civil War era, Mount Pleasant and nearby Henry County played a significant role in human-rights efforts and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
The station building itself was constructed in 1912 by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, using pressed-brick architecture.
