Station History & Setting
In late January 2018, Amtrak moved into the new Birmingham Intermodal Facility. The station brings together Amtrak deals, local and inter-city buses, and shuttles in one convenient downtown location. The complex spans the blocks between the railroad viaduct and Morris Avenue from 16th to 19th Streets.
This facility replaced earlier smaller Amtrak and local bus stations.
The approximately $32 million project was funded by $23.6 million in grants from the Federal Transit Administration’s Bus & Bus Facilities program and $6 million in city funds via a bond initiative.
Nearby, Railroad Park is a 19-acre greenspace created from former industrial land. It features hills, a lake, wildflowers, native trees, a walking path along the viaduct, and views of passing trains.
Historically, Birmingham grew after the Civil War when railroads and industrial business boomed—earning the city the nickname “Magic City”. The site of one of the U.S. civil-rights movement’s key chapters, Birmingham played a crucial role in the desegregation of public accommodations in the 1960s.
